New to Video? Part 1

Are you considering getting into videography? Do you want to try to make money making videos and editing them? Well if you are pretty new you will want to consider a few things before diving into this exciting expensive world of video.

  • Have you ever used a video camera before?
This sounds like such a basic question but it is a good one, you don’t know if you will like something until you try it. Ask around and see if any of your friends or family have a camera and go play with one. Pick it up, turn it on, and try it out. You may get a feeling for it or not.

  • What kind of camera should you buy?
You have now determined you like making video and you are thinking about buying a camera but not sure which kind you need, as there are many price point and options. The first thing to consider is, how much do you want to spend on a camera? There are 3 types of cameras on the market right now: consumer, prosumer, and professional.

If you have $500 or around there, a consumer is perfect for you. They are small, some have tape drives while others take SD or other small flash cards to store the video and most of them run auto settings for you video. These consumer cameras generally now have HD capabilities and the basic run of the mill features like image stabilization and optical zoom with a digital zoom. If you are just starting out and not sure if you can make any money, you should buy a consumer and do some family and friend weddings or simple projects to see if you can make a living out of video.

Stay tuned for part 2 (Prosumer) and part 3 (technical and tips) soon.
